Chapter 8
Megan
I do my homework while waiting for Frank to come home. Two hours later Iâve not only finished my homework but also had next weekâs reading done ahead of time. Itâs past six, but Iâm still alone. I want to go over to Pennyâs unit and check on them, but I control my impulse and watch funny videos on YouTube instead. My phone rings when Iâm laughing over a cat diving. I pick it up as soon as I see Joshâs name.
âHi Josh. Whatâs up?â
âNothing,â Josh answers with a yawn, looking sleepy. âI just got up from a nap.â
I laugh. âA nap at this time of the day? You arenât gonna sleep tonight.â
âI know, babe,â he says. âThis quarantine thing really messes me up. I now sleep during the days and stay awake at night. I donât even want to do my homework.â
âThatâs not good,â I advise him. âYou still need to pass your classes.â
âI know,â he says. âI miss school.â
I giggle. âThatâs news. You hated school.â
âWhat did you do today?â
âI went to a boat trip with Frank.â
Josh pauses. âYour old manâs friend? Was it fun?â
Oh, you have no idea, Josh. âYes, we saw some beavers.â
âBeavers are disgusting,â Josh says. âThey chew down trees.â
âYou wouldnât say it if you saw them. Theyâre cute,â I say with an urge to defend my new favorite animal.
I take the pen lying on the desk and hold it horizontally between my teeth, mimicking a beaver chewing wood.
I was hoping Josh would laugh, but he doesnât. In fact, he isnât looking at my mouth. Heâs staring down and his mouth opens.
âHot damn, whatâre you wearing, babe? Are those Nippies?â
Oops, I quickly tilt the phone up so he canât gawk at me. Iâm wearing the same shirt I wore this morning, but unbuttoned because it was warm in my room.
âPlease, Meg, let me see them again,â Josh begs. âTheyâre pretty.â
âNo,â I say, blushing.
âPlease, Meg. Let me see you just once,â he says, his voice turning husky. âYou donât know how boring it is to be home every day, facing no one but my old man.â
Joshâs mom is a nurse who still works every day.
âMm, I donât know, Josh. Why donât you just browse online? Thereâre lots of free pictures of naked women.â
âI know, Meg, but they arenât as beautiful as you!â
I hesitate a moment longer, and then I let my vanity get the better of me. I tilt the phone toward my chest.
âHoly crap,â Joshâs eyes bulge and he swallows. âTheyâre spectacular, Meg. Are they real?â
âOf course theyâre real, you jerk!â I say, moving my phone up. âYouâd better study now. And donât call me every day.â
âWhat? Youâre too busy playing with your sugar daddy?â
âShut up!â I end the call and stand up.
As soon as I turn, I shriek. Frank is standing at the door of my bedroom, his eyes narrow and his jaw clenches.
âHi, Frank!â I say with a trembling voice. âIâm sorry, Iâ¦err⦠didnât know you were back.â
âIs that your boyfriend?â he asks.
âNo! I donât have a boyfriend.
