Chapter 8

Megan

I do my homework while waiting for Frank to come home. Two hours later I’ve not only finished my homework but also had next week’s reading done ahead of time. It’s past six, but I’m still alone. I want to go over to Penny’s unit and check on them, but I control my impulse and watch funny videos on YouTube instead. My phone rings when I’m laughing over a cat diving. I pick it up as soon as I see Josh’s name.

“Hi Josh. What’s up?”

“Nothing,” Josh answers with a yawn, looking sleepy. “I just got up from a nap.”

I laugh. “A nap at this time of the day? You aren’t gonna sleep tonight.”

“I know, babe,” he says. “This quarantine thing really messes me up. I now sleep during the days and stay awake at night. I don’t even want to do my homework.”

“That’s not good,” I advise him. “You still need to pass your classes.”

“I know,” he says. “I miss school.”

I giggle. “That’s news. You hated school.”

“What did you do today?”

“I went to a boat trip with Frank.”

Josh pauses. “Your old man’s friend? Was it fun?”

Oh, you have no idea, Josh. ‘Yes, we saw some beavers.”

“Beavers are disgusting,” Josh says. “They chew down trees.”

“You wouldn’t say it if you saw them. They’re cute,” I say with an urge to defend my new favorite animal.

I take the pen lying on the desk and hold it horizontally between my teeth, mimicking a beaver chewing wood.

I was hoping Josh would laugh, but he doesn’t. In fact, he isn’t looking at my mouth. He’s staring down and his mouth opens.

“Hot damn, what’re you wearing, babe? Are those Nippies?”

Oops, I quickly tilt the phone up so he can’t gawk at me. I’m wearing the same shirt I wore this morning, but unbuttoned because it was warm in my room.

“Please, Meg, let me see them again,” Josh begs. “They’re pretty.”

“No,” I say, blushing.

“Please, Meg. Let me see you just once,” he says, his voice turning husky. “You don’t know how boring it is to be home every day, facing no one but my old man.”

Josh’s mom is a nurse who still works every day.

“Mm, I don’t know, Josh. Why don’t you just browse online? There’re lots of free pictures of naked women.”

“I know, Meg, but they aren’t as beautiful as you!”

I hesitate a moment longer, and then I let my vanity get the better of me. I tilt the phone toward my chest.

“Holy crap,” Josh’s eyes bulge and he swallows. “They’re spectacular, Meg. Are they real?”

“Of course they’re real, you jerk!” I say, moving my phone up. “You’d better study now. And don’t call me every day.”

“What? You’re too busy playing with your sugar daddy?”

“Shut up!” I end the call and stand up.

As soon as I turn, I shriek. Frank is standing at the door of my bedroom, his eyes narrow and his jaw clenches.

“Hi, Frank!” I say with a trembling voice. “I’m sorry, I…err… didn’t know you were back.”

“Is that your boyfriend?” he asks.

“No! I don’t have a boyfriend.
